Challenge

Ships deployed for months cannot easily receive spare parts from shore. Critical repairs are delayed, reducing operational readiness.

Solution

DoD established the Navy Afloat AM Programme of Record in FY2024. Ships carry FDM printers; the ElemX liquid metal jetting printer (ADDiTEC) was deployed and used at sea to produce aluminium parts. OTA contracts accelerate part qualification.
